Attica has mountains half an hour from central Athens: Parnitha with its fir forest and refuges, Ymittos above Kaisariani, Kithaironas, and Gerania overlooking the Corinthian Gulf. Athens clubs head out every Sunday, often by coach from the city centre, and many routes are perfect for a first hike.

The Peloponnese is the busiest weekend destination: Vouraikos gorge along the rack railway, the Menalon Trail and Lousios gorge, the Neda waterfalls, Helmos and the Waters of Styx, Taygetos and Parnonas. Most outings from Athens are day trips by coach.

Thrace is still unknown to most hikers: the Rhodope range with its dense border forests, the Nestos gorge with a trail above the river's meander, the Pomak villages of Xanthi, the Dadia forest in Evros and Mount Ismaros above the sea at Maroneia. EOS Xanthi heads out every Sunday and also runs midweek walks.

Crete is gorge paradise: Samaria, Agia Eirini, Imbros, Aradaina, the Gorge of the Dead. Above them rise the White Mountains, Psiloritis and Dikti. The Chania and Heraklion clubs hike all year round.
