Why we built Pezoparea
The Pezoparea team · Updated · 3 min read
Pezoparea automatically gathers the organized outings of Greek mountaineering clubs and hiking companies into one calendar with filters and a map. We built it because outings are scattered across dozens of websites and hard to find, and because your first hike shouldn't start with a search. We want anyone thinking about it to easily find the outing that suits them and to live what we live in the mountains: the view from the summit, coffee at the refuge, the group that becomes friends.
The problem
Most of us don't really know Greece's nature. We look for something new on a getaway abroad, while a few hours from home there are fir forests, gorges, lakes and summits with views over two seas. Greece is one of the most mountainous countries in Europe, and yet its mountains stay unknown to most people.
And when someone wants to start, they don't know where. Outings are scattered across dozens of club websites, PDFs and social media posts, and it's very hard to find them all in one place. Many people also hesitate: “Will I manage?”, “Is it dangerous?”, “I have no one to go with.” So the mountains stay for the few.
Our goal is to make hiking more accessible, for everyone and at every age. To easily find an outing that fits you, with people who know the trail, and to discover a Greece you didn't know existed.
The answer: Pezoparea
Pezoparea is an initiative started by amateur hikers, people like you who fell in love with the mountains and wanted to share them.
We gathered every outing in one place and made them easy to find: you choose when, where you start from and how hard you want it, and you see what suits you. Then you go to the organizer and sign up.
But we want more than a calendar. We want to bring the community together, people who have been walking for years and people taking their first step, so that together we get to know Greece from scratch and fall in love with Greek nature again.
Hiking is social
For one day or more you walk next to people you didn't know that morning. On the coach, on the trail, at the water stop, at the table after the descent, conversations start on their own.
You leave behind the daily routine, the city and the noise, and live something together with others: the climb you made with effort, the view that left everyone speechless, the laughter on the way back. Shared experiences like these bring people together, and often the mountain group becomes your group in the city too.
