Hiking with a dog in Greece: rules and tips

The Pezoparea team · Updated · 6 min read

You can hike with a dog on most Greek trails, on a leash, as Law 4830/2021 requires. In the core of Parnitha National Park dogs are banned even on a leash. Watch out for sheepdogs, pine processionary caterpillars in spring and summer heat, and always ask the organizer before bringing a dog on a group outing.

What does Greek law say about dogs on trails?

Greece's pet welfare law, Law 4830/2021, says that on walks the owner must keep the dog on a leash and close by to prevent accidents (Article 9, Government Gazette A' 169/2021). Dogs must also be microchipped and registered.

On a mountain, the leash isn't just a formality. There are flocks, sheepdogs, wild animals and drop-offs, and a dog running ahead can get into trouble in seconds.
