Vikos Gorge hike and Zagori: the best trails

The Pezoparea team · Updated · 7 min read

The classic Vikos Gorge hike runs from Monodendri to Vikos village: about 12.5 km and 5–7 hours. Zagori also has easier walks, like the Beloi viewpoint and the stone bridges near Kipi, plus the Dragon Lake on Mount Tymfi for hikers ready for a big climb.

Zagori, north of Ioannina in Epirus, has 46 stone villages, arched bridges and cobbled paths between Mount Tymfi and Vikos Gorge. The area is part of the Northern Pindos National Park and the Vikos–Aoos UNESCO Global Geopark. You can stay three days and walk something different every day.

What is the Vikos Gorge hike like?

You start in Monodendri, at 1,060 m, and drop to the gorge floor on the cobbled path near Agia Paraskevi monastery. From there the trail follows the gorge through forest and over boulders. At the junction towards Papingo, a 10-minute detour leads to the Voidomatis springs, usually the most convenient place for water. The finish at Vikos village comes after a good climb: total ascent is around 570 m and descent around 830 m.

The hike is one-way, so you need a taxi or someone to pick you up at the end. A group outing solves this: the coach drops you in Monodendri and collects you at the end.

In spring, after heavy rain, the riverbed can hold water in places that are dry in summer. Ask your guide or locals about trail conditions.

Which Zagori hike suits beginners?

Start with Beloi. From Vradeto it's about 2.3 km and a 40 minute walk to a natural balcony above the gorge, with a protective wall. Then walk the bridges loop from Koukouli suggested by the Zagori Ecomuseum: 4.9 km and family-friendly.

When is the best time to hike in Zagori?

Spring and autumn are the most convenient, April to June and September to November. For Dragon Lake, wait for the snow to melt. It is usually walkable from late spring to October, and you should ask about conditions before you go. Vikos can be walked in winter in good weather, but the days are short.

How do I get there and what should I bring?

Ioannina has an airport and KTEL buses from Athens and Thessaloniki. Monodendri is about 40 km away. Buses to the villages are rare, so most visitors drive or join an outing.

How do I join a group hike in Zagori?

EOS Ioannina runs outings in the area, and local hiking companies offer day and multi-day routes. Clubs from Athens and Thessaloniki organize three-day trips, mostly on public holidays. On Pezoparea you can see which outings are scheduled, with their difficulty.
